While primarily used in emergency situations, a dashcam can also serve as a way to capture interesting sights and events.

A dashcam can be neatly tucked in below your mirror, making it unobstructive while still easily accessible.

When hardwired, a dashcam can remain active even while the car is off, saving video any time something gets near your car.

Even without window tint, dashcams are difficult to see externally from any reasonable distance. Anyone interfering with your car almost certainly won't notice the camera until it's too late for them to hide.

With a high end camera, a single dash-cam can cover nearly 360 degrees around your car, with two blindspots near the A-pillars.

Insurance

A dashcam is the ultimate insurance policy. In fact, certain insurance providers will even give a discount for vehicles that have a dashcam installed! A dashcam can be the one thing between false accusations and definitively proving your innocence.

Constant

Have you ever witnessed something unique or unexplained, and wished you had captured it on video? A dashcam runs constantly as you're driving, and even while you're parked. No matter what happens while driving, a dashcam will capture it.

Distractionless

A properly installed dashcam turns itself on and off automatically. You don't need to do anything you wouldn't normally do while driving. In fact, most dashcams can even be configured to automatically save video when a sharp change in direction is detected, meaning you won't forget to save the video during a stressful event.

Compact

Dashcams are extremely compact, and are rarely larger than a GPS. Regardless of where you'd like your dashcam installed, it's highly unlikely to disrupt your view of the road. This also means they are easier to conceal from potential thieves.

Efficient

A hardwired dashcam is capable of running even when the car is turned off. Dashcams are so efficient that they can run on your car battery for days at a time before running low. Additionally, V0LT dashcam installations use low voltage cut-offs, to ensure your dashcam will turn off before draining your car battery and leaving you stranded.

Camera

This is the camera itself, and it goes without saying that the camera unit you choose is extremely important.

    • This camera is a single unit that records forward video only.
    • This is a solid, entry level dashcam that has all the features you'd want in a camera system, without the price tag of many higher end systems.
    • It offers 1440p 60fps video, parking protection, and GPS recording, just like its higher end counterparts.

    • This camera has two units: A front facing camera, and a rear facing camera that mounts to the back window of the car.
    • If you're looking for a camera that prioritizes visibility for driving, this camera is a great option.
    • This camera offers 1440p 60fps recording.

    • This camera is a single unit that has both a front facing camera and a cabin facing camera for near 360 coverage of your vehicle.
    • If you want a camera that's great for both parking protection and driving recording, this is a great option.
    • The pictures in the slideshow above depict this camera, and the images it captures.
    • This camera offers up to 4K 30fps on the front camera, or 1440p 30fps video recording on both cameras.

Power

It goes without saying that a camera system needs power to function. This is where you specify how you want to supply power to your camera system.

    • A cigarette lighter plug allows you to connect your dashcam an accessory plug in your car.
    • It's important to note that dashcams connected via cigarette lighter port will usually be disabled after the car is turned off. If you want your dashcam to monitor your car while it's parked, you should get your camera hardwired instead.

    • Fusebox hardwiring is considered the "fully installed" method of installing a dashcam. If you plan on selling your car in the near future, and you want to keep the dashcam for your new car, this method could make removing the camera more tedious. However, if you want the most integrated dashcam experience, this is a great option.

Storage

Your dashcam system needs a microSD card to store video it captures. By 'locking' a video, you can prevent it's deletion. However, normal videos will be deleted automatically as space runs out to allow for continous recording. If you'd like to keep recorded videos for longer, you should consider upgrading to a larger storage medium.

    • If you already have a compatible microSD card, or want to purchase your own, you can chose to not include one with your camera system.

    • If you just plan on using your dashcam to save interesting and important moments, 32GB of storage is perfectly acceptable.

    • If you'd like to be able to reference old, unlocked videos on your camera, 128GB of storage is a worthwhile addition to your camera system.
    • If you plan on leaving your car parked for days at a time, and want extended parking protection, this option is worth considering, since it will allow your dashcam to keep a longer record of parking events.

Features

Here you can select additional, optional features.

    • A kill switch is embedded somewhere in the interior of your car, and allows you to quickly toggle the camera on and off.
    • This can be useful to reduce battery drain while parked in a safe environment, or to temporarily cut power to the camera for sake of privacy.
    • If you choose not to add this feature to your installation, the camera can still be temporarily turned off unplugging it, or pulling its fuse (if applicable).

    • If you know exactly what you need, you can opt to have your dashcam hardwired directly to your car, without a voltage cut off.
    • Unless you fully understand the consequences, you should not select this feature, since it removes the protection system preventing your battery from going dead while the car is parked for an extended period of time.
    • This will extend the dashcam's run time while the car is parked, but is highly likely to cause damage to the car battery if not monitored.
